Cefpodoxime is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It belongs to the class of medicines known as cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic used in the treatment of several bacterial infections such as bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs); pneumonia; gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease); and infections of the skin, ear, sinuses, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract. Cefpodoxime attacks bacteria by hampering the formation of bacterial protective covering (cell wall), imperative for their survival. Antibiotics such as Cefpodoxime are only effective in treating bacterial infections and not viral infections such as the common cold and flu. It is advisable to not use antibiotics when not required as it may affect their efficacy and lead to antibiotic resistance.
